ArcGIS at Murray State

Murray State University, through the Mid-America Remote sensing Center (MARC), is a member of the Commonwealth of Kentucky's Council on Postsecondary Education (CPE) statewide license agreement with ESRI, the world leader in geographic information systems (GIS) software, consulting, education, and training.

ESRI software is available for all faculty, staff, and currently enrolled students engaged in research and educational activities and pursuits, such as grants, projects, theses, and dissertations. Software cannot be used for contracts not associated with student research, nor the management of university assets.

The KY-CPE / ESRI statewide license agreement provides many benefits in exchange for an on-going financial commitment.

The statewide license agreement provides software licenses to faculty, staff, and students for the following products:
  • ArcGIS 10.x for Desktop. In addition to the core software, Spatial Analyst, 3D Analyst, Network Analyst, and Geostatistical Analyst are included.
Faculty have the option of installing ArcGIS for Desktop on computers in computer labs, or any device belonging to Murray State University. ArcGIS for Desktop can be installed on personal computers using a stand-alone license good for 180 days.

Students also have the option of requesting ArcGIS for Desktop software for use on personal laptops or desktops. Students can request ArcGIS software by completing the MARC request form found here.

In addition to desktop software products, server and mobile products are available:
ESRI also supports the online mapping application, ArcGIS Online for Education. ArcGIS Online for Education allows any faculty, staff, or student to create maps online (after creating an ESRI Global Account), share those maps, or embed those maps in other applications, such as Microsoft Office, or another website.

ESRI also provides a number of online education and training resources. First, ESRI offers Virtual Campus courses. Virtual Campus (VC) provide a means of learning GIS, improving GIS knowledge, learning new modules, or enhancing pre-existing skills. The course vary in length and complexity, requiring students to invest 2hrs to as many as 24hrs, depending on the course.

ESRI provides a number of videos of events, seminars, education and training via ESRI-TV. These videos cover announcements by program managers, developers, and trainers demonstrating how to perform various tasks and analyses using ESRI software productions.
